Cecil Gilkerson Memorial Golf Tournament-Cecil Gilkerson served as Director of Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department from 1954-1989. During that time Cecil was building the foundations of the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department he was also important in the development of the Virginia Recreation & Park Society (VRPS) serving as President in the 1960’s. The goal of VRPS is to bring Parks and Recreation professionals all over the Commonwealth together to network, learn, share ideas and promote parks and recreation. Cecil was also instrumental in bringing the First Tee Organization to Harrisonburg when Heritage Oaks Golf Course was first opened. We honor Cecil’s memory by having the proceeds of the Cecil Gilkerson Memorial Golf Tournament be distributed to these two organizations he cared so deeply about.
