 Message from the President
Hello VRPS Members & Leaders,
Welcome 2021! I am excited to serve as your 2021 VRPS President. I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season with family, friends and colleagues, and are ready for the BEST 2021. For VRPS, 2021 will be the year of RE-Set…RE-Build!, focused on three primary goals of Re-Structure, Re-Engage and Re-Invent. January will be a month of transition and getting key leaders and newly formed Action Teams in place to support the core needs and services of VRPS.
For most, 2020 will go down in the books as one of the most eventful and memorable years of our careers. It evoked uncertainty, fear and stress for some. For many, it evoked creativity, innovation and motivation, especially in our parks and recreation leaders and agencies. I was reminded that even in the midst of crisis, we are a RESILIENT profession and the STRENGTH of VRPS is you. At our VRPS Leadership Orientation on December 10, 2020, over 30 VRPS leaders gathered virtually and shared their enthusiasm and 2021 vision and goals for their respective areas. This inspired and assured me that 2021 breeds OPPORTUNITY. This is attributed entirely to the past, present and future VRPS members, Board, leaders, partners and sponsors. With admiration, I thank and applaud Past President, Dan Smith, and Executive Director, Jim Stutts, for their creative and steadfast leadership during 2020. Be assured that our 67-year foundation of VRPS is in good hands as we lead Forward together.

Virtual Playground Maintenance Instruction Course – 2021
The National Recreation and Park Association’s Playground Maintenance Course will provide an understanding of the most prevalent playground hazards and safe maintenance and repair practices. This one-day course (0.6 CEUs) will train on playground safety standards, playground owner responsibilities and will include maintenance and repair discussions on playground equipment, surfacing and site items
Why Attend?
  • According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 240,000 children are injured each year on playgrounds.
  • Poor maintenance is one of the leading causes of injuries on playgrounds.

Virtual Certified Playground Safety Inspector Course
March 3, 2021
CPSI certifications are valid for 3 years; is it time to renew?
With the safety of both professionals and instructors in mind, NRPA is offering a virtual CPSI Blended Learning Course this Spring. . The course will be comprised of 12 hours of independent online learning, followed by 4 hours of a live Virtual Training Session by ZOOM with an instructor.
Examinations will be completed via computer-based examination at PSI Professional Testing sites upon completion of the CPSI Online Learning Course and CPSI Virtual Learning Session.
Becoming a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) positions you as a leader and role model in the public playground safety community.  Invest in Certification:
  • protect children from injury due to playground hazards,
  • protect your business or agency from costly liabilities,
  • open the door to more opportunities for career advancement,

The drop-down box that displays “Membership” can be changed to search for “Donation”. 2020/21 Leadership Training Institute – April 26-28, 2021

As many have quoted before, we might not be able to control the wind, but we can always adjust our sail…
Like many this year, due to various protocols and travel restrictions still in place across the state, LTI has had to adjust their sails and change direction. With the health and safety of our delegates at the forefront, LTI will be going virtual.    
Although it may look a little different this time, LTI will still bring dynamic speakers, interactive sessions, and opportunities for networking.
Adding to the LTI experience this year, 5 preconference sessions are being included throughout the 6 months leading up to the Institute. Please visit the LTI webpage  for more information on dates, times and topic sessions.

Health & Wellness Resource Group
The Health & Wellness Resource Group is suitable for facility managers, fitness programmers, and all recreation professionals who would like to learn more about providing health and wellness programming and services. Recent meeting topics include agency marketing of fitness programs, enhancing personal training services, and virtual fitness programming. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 7th at 10 a.m. via Microsoft Teams.
