General Statement of Job
The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform arborist work to protect and preserve the Town's existing tree canopy by enforcing the guidelines in the Town Tree preservation and planting manual.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
This is a non-exempt position
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Reviews and analyzes complex public and private plans and permits for construction projects to provide information on how to best meet requirements in the Town. This includes but is not limited to review for protecting tree safe areas, protecting town trees, canopy coverage requirements, and storm water management planting requirements.
Implements and administers the Town’s Tree Preservation and Planting Specification Manual.
Responds to Town citizen concerns and inquiries relating to the pruning or removal of trees, shrubs, etc., adjacent to, or on, their property. Evaluates and identifies trees and shrubs on private property, including insect and pest identification, abiotic conditions, and structural integrity; recommends warranted management actions.
Participates in on-site pre-construction meetings and inspections required during building process to ensure correct placement and installation of tree protection fencing, as well as adherence to all necessary tree preservation measures. Provides site inspections, final, and bond release inspections to ensure that Town requirements and approved plans/permits have been met.
Inspects Town trees to identify and/or prevent existing or potential safety hazards, including diseases, infestations, weather-related damage or other dangerous conditions.
Manages the Town’s tree inventory software system and inspection schedule for annual rotation.
Requests/requires tree bonds and planting season waivers on sites during development and performs final inspections on plant stock in accordance with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards.
Uses a variety of computer software such as Horticopia, Tyler Munis, Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, Treekeeper, idtPlans, Bluebeam, etc.
Assists Town Arborist in the propagating of plants, shrubs and flowers for use in planting beds; selecting appropriate variety of plants; ordering, receiving, growing and maintaining flowers from seed to bloom; tracking growth, disease, and maintaining town flower beds. Prunes, mulches, weeds, edges and waters; selects the proper tree for correct placement; buys new trees, analyzes trees for health, vigor and good root stock; maintains trees; plants, prunes, mulches and waters to maintain trees; maintains greenhouse; checks that equipment is working; coordinates repairs; orders new equipment.
Uses a variety of tools such as chain saws, hand tools, pitchforks, rakes, power shrub pruners, string trimmers, backpack sprayer, etc.
Uses a variety of supplies such as nursery stock, bulb seeds, soil, mulch, pesticides, general office supplies, etc.
Works occasional weekends and evenings for special events or as required.
Reports to work for snow or other emergencies as assigned.
Guides, helps, and advises less experienced workers in all areas of job duties; fills in for Town Arborist.
Attends meetings; makes presentations; and trains as needed.
Performs related work as assigned.
Requires three years full-time landscaping and/or horticulture maintenance, landscape architecture, urban planning or other closely related experience, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
Valid Commercial Driver's License OR
Valid State Driver's License and ability to obtain CDL within one year of employment
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Arborist Certification within 6 months of employment
Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification within 6 months of employment
