Description

RECREATION SPECIALIST I / GROUP FITNESS SUPERVISOR duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • A personal commitment to health,fitness and wellness with an outward facing professional appearance
  • Physical ability to instruct a minimum of five classes a week and maximum of ten; fill-in for instructors and group fitness supervisor’s as needed
  • Knowledge and ability to instruct numerous group fitness formats
  • Set policy, procedures and standards for all fitness programs including safety, customer service, and staff accountability
  • Develop, execute and assess large scale fitness events for the center(s) and community at large
  • Design, create and maintain monthly group fitness schedules; accurately track staff usage and fiscal allocations
  • Assess group fitness program, analyze and report data on an ongoing basis
  • Continually research fitness industry trends and propose program changes to meet thedemographic needs of the community
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate approximately 20 group fitness instructors
  • Maintain instructor certification records and provide/recommend opportunities for professional growth
  • Provide ongoing coaching and constructive feedback
  • Meet or exceed annual revenue and performance goals; report as required on performance and variances
  • Address patron comments, concerns, behaviors and conduct as necessary with friendly customer service
  • Maintain detailed participation reports and other statistical records for programs offered
  • Purchase group fitness equipment in compliance with City procurement processes and accurately track allocated expenditures
  • Collaboratively build a comprehensive fitness and wellness program including personal training, registered fitness & wellness classes, group fitness, weight room patron engagement and other related activities
  • Directly oversee all aspects of the group fitness room to include member check-in, equipment needs, purchases, and replacement; maintain a welcoming, clean environment and space
  • Actively promote all fitness and wellness programs and services to maximize patron engagement and results

Required Experience

MINIMUMS: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leader or recreation program supervisor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work varied hours, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs.

May be required to have a current and valid driver’s license.

Alpha I Status: Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR GROUP FITNESS ONLY: Must possess a current national level Group Fitness certification from ACE, NASM, or comparable. Certification must be recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

This position is being advertised as a pool, and applications will be used to fill current vacancies and any other similar Recreation Specialist I positions that become available within six (6) months from the closing date of this posting.

This is an Alpha I position, which may require reporting to work during periods of emergency or inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status. The work schedule associated with this position varies to ensure fitness programming coverage.

Work schedules could include early mornings, mid-day, evenings, weekends, holidays or split shifts. Work location may change based on programming needs. If considered for this position, candidates must pass a City administered practical exercise relative to the format and particular area of expertise.
