The Gardener II (Maintenance Specialist III - P&R) position functions as part of a team responsible for performing skilled and responsible horticultural duties related to grounds and landscape maintenance, pesticide application, installation of landscaped and floral bed areas in city parks, downtown mall, schools, right-of-ways and public facilities. This position is essential to maintaining an extremely effective team that follows defined schedules. Performs other duties as assigned. May supervise the work of subordinate staff, which may include voluntary, temporary and benefited staff. Reports to a Maintenance Specialist IV or a Management Specialist.

The hiring salary will be between $20.00 and $22.16 ($41,600 to $46,092.80 annually.) Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. Minimum Requirements: 

  • Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to a high school diploma or GED;
  • At least three years of experience in a related field;
  • Possession of a valid, appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must be eligible to operate a City vehicle;
  • Within 6 months of start date, requires Class B Commercial Driver's License;
  • VDOT Flagger certification within 6 months of hire;
  • Requires Certified Pesticide Technician License with Category 3a and 3b by time of hire.

**Effective November 1, 2021, all newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement.**
