Oversees the planning, coordination, and supervision of the activities of the beach lifeguards and performs beach lifeguard duties to ensure public safety at City of Hampton beaches. May supervise others.
Examples of Work
•Plans, coordinates, and supervises the activities of the beach lifeguard unit. Makes recommendations to the Aquatics Coordinator of Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Services on matters of hiring, scheduling, training, supervising, motivating, and disciplinary counseling and actions for the beach lifeguard unit. •Prepares and distributes weekly duty schedules for all beach personnel. Ensures that appropriate staff is scheduled and present at all times. Develops and implements a rotating schedule of breaks and rest periods to optimize lifeguard performance. •Maintains a daily accounting of all staff duty time. Ensures that all time is documented correctly and ensures timely submission to administrative staff. •Develops and maintains daily reports of all activities at the beach. Maintains a record of all accidents and disturbances occurring at the beach and surrounding areas and notifies appropriate officials. •Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas and proper safety practices. Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning. Administers first-aid as required. Calls for assistance when needed. Provides immediate backup to lifeguards during disturbances at the beach. Keeps Aquatics Program Coordinator informed and up-to-date regarding issues and activities at the beach. •Interacts effectively with the general public in responding to concerns or complaints, and fosters positive and effective public relations. Serves as the point of contact for the Recreation division relative to beach activities and the beach lifeguard unit. Notifies appropriate officials of accidents and incidents at the beach and surrounding areas. •Ensures that the lifeguard physical fitness program is current and effective. Ensures that all required certifications of beach personnel are current. May provide basic first aid, CPR and Lifeguarding instruction. Relieves lifeguard staff when needed. •Inspects designated areas frequently to ensure cleanliness and completion of routine maintenance of beach and surrounding areas. •Demonstrates regular and punctual attendance. •Performs other related duties as assigned.
Must be at least 21 years of age. Requires five (5) or more years of experience as a lifeguard with a minimum of one (1) year of experience supervising the work of others; experience on a public beach is highly desirable. Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification is required. Current Basic First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications are required. Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certifications are preferred. Successfully completed training on Preventing Disease Transmission, Oxygen Administration and on the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is required, or must be completed within 30 days of employment in this position.
